Research
SANIGUT research results from the manufacturer’s documents: a laboratory test and trials in piglets, rabbits and laying hens. Figures are given as they appear in the reports.
Salmonella and E. coli agglutination in vitro
- Conducted by
- Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), IRTA report
- Year
- 2009
- Method
- Bacterial suspensions with the product under a microscope, at least 20 fields per determination. Pure mannose 0.05 M taken as 100%
- Strains
- 3 Salmonella strains, including S. enterica var. enteritidis ATCC 14901 and CECT 723; 2 E. coli strains
Result
The aggregation capacity of carob bean gum exceeded 50% of the pure mannose level for both Salmonella and E. coli.
IRTA conclusion: the Armengol Hermanos S.A. product supplies mannose to the diet and acts as a preventive agent against Salmonella and E. coli in poultry, pig and cattle feed.

Applications for this speciesWeaned piglets challenged with E. coli K88
- Conducted by
- Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Guerra AA et al.
- Year
- 2013
- Animals
- 72 piglets weaned at 28 days, 24 pens of 3
- Groups
- Control; zinc oxide 3 kg/t; carob seed 5 kg/t
- Challenge
- Oral E. coli K88, 6×10⁹ CFU
Result
On day 4 after challenge, E. coli counts in faeces and on the ileal mucosa in the carob seed group matched the zinc oxide group. The Pig-MAP inflammation marker fell almost as much as with zinc oxide.
| Control | Zinc oxide | Carob seed | P | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| E. coli in faeces, log CFU/g | 10.4 | 9.0 | 8.7 | 0.03 |
| Enterobacteria in faeces, log CFU/g | 10.9 | 9.3 | 8.9 | 0.05 |
| E. coli on ileal mucosa, log CFU/g | 6.1 | 4.6 | 4.1 | 0.07 |
| E. coli K88 in colon, log gene copies/g | 10.3 | 7.3 | 8.9 | 0.05 |
| Pig-MAP in blood, mg/dL | 1.20 | 0.70 | 0.74 | 0.03 |
For E. coli K88 in the colon, the carob seed group did not differ significantly from either the control or the zinc oxide group.

Applications for this speciesGrowing rabbits without antibiotics
- Conducted by
- COPRI (France), trial no. 63
- Year
- 2010
- Animals
- 1,098 rabbits from weaning (36 days) to slaughter (74 days)
- Product
- A carob seed product, named SANICAROB in the report
Result
Mortality from day 35 to 56 fell from 6.2% to 3.6%, and slaughter yield rose from 55.7% to 56.6%.
| Control | With product | P | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mortality, days 35-56, % | 6.2 | 3.6 | 0.050 |
| Mortality, days 35-70, % | 10.9 | 7.9 | 0.095 |
| Average daily gain, days 35-56, g | 43.6 | 44.3 | 0.035 |
| Small non-marketable rabbits, % | 2.6 | 1.2 | 0.088 |
| Slaughter yield, % | 55.7 | 56.6 | <0.001 |
The authors estimate the product raises the farm’s gross margin by about €0.10 per weaned rabbit.

Applications for this speciesLaying hens, interim report
- Conducted by
- Veterinarian Bruno Henrique Lopes Guastalli, Granja Ono farm (Brazil)
- Period
- 18.04-23.05.2013, recorded weekly
- Groups
- A with SANIGUT, B without SANIGUT
Result
Egg production was higher in the SANIGUT group, and in May the share of dirty eggs was lower. The author recorded no difference in droppings consistency and no benefit to egg quality.
